President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, has reportedly received a secret payment in the neighborhood of $400,000 in exchange for arranging talks between Trump and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in 2017, according to the British Broadcasting Corp.
Reuters reports intermediaries acting for Poroshenko arranged the payment, who wanted to open a back channel to President Trump, the BBC reports, citing unnamed sources in Kiev.
Michael Cohen was allegedly brought into the deal because Ukraine’s lobbyists and its embassy in Washington were unsuccessful getting to the type of access to President Trump they needed. Poroshenko “needed something that could be portrayed as ‘talks,’” the broadcaster reported.
“This story is completely false,” Cohen said in a text message to Reuters. The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Reuters received an email from Poroshenko’s office saying the story was false. “Blatant lie, slander and fake”.
Scott Dworkin points out: “BREAKING: Michael Cohen got paid $400,000 to arrange a meeting between Trump and the president of Ukraine. This is corruption at the highest levels of the government. An extortion scheme involving Trump, his attorney and millions of dollars. His presidency should be over by now.”
