In a recent interview with Fox News, Donald Trump said he had just learned that Ford Motor Company was about to “fire all their employees in the United States and…move to Mexico.” Trump has said that Ford and others would have to pay a 35 percent tax on any car they send back to the United States for sale.
That’s big news, Donald! It’s also completely and utterly untrue.
Ford CEO Mark Fields response to this claim?
“It’s really unfortunate when politics get in the way of the facts,”
adding when asked if any part of the Ford operation would be moving to Mexico,
“Absolutely not. Zero. Not one job will be lost. Most of our investment is here in the US. And that’s the way it will continue to be.”
Ford is opening a new plant in Mexico, taking their number of employees there from 8,800 to around 12,000, but that is a far cry from Trump’s allegation that Ford was going to “fire all their employees in the United States.”
Ford has nearly 85,000 employees in the US, up 50% from just five years ago.
It’s not entirely clear why Donald Trump saw the need to lie about Ford’s employment. Unless…is it at all possible that Trump is using fear of American jobs moving to other countries as a politic tactic? Say it isn’t so!
