Trump has finally figured out that he can’t fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller. His allies in Congress aren’t helping him and he doesn’t seem to have the power to do it alone. It now appears he’s taking another approach to fight back and try to slow him down. It may be one of the craziest schemes he’s cooked up to date.
NBC News is reporting that Trump’s allies have shared his new strategy, which is to bring criminal charges against Mueller and those who work for him. If Mueller and his prosecutors are tied up in other cases, they can’t focus on his investigation. This is seriously insane and would create massive amounts of legal and constitutional questions.
Sources say that Trump has adopted a two-track strategy to deal with the Mueller investigation.
One is an un-Trumpian passivity and trust. He keeps telling some in his circle that Mueller — any day now — will tell him he is off the hook for any charge of collusion with the Russians or obstruction of justice.
But Trump — who trusts no one, or at least no one for long — has now decided that he must have an alternative strategy that does not involve having Justice Department officials fire Mueller.
“I think he’s been convinced that firing Mueller would not only create a firestorm, it would play right into Mueller’s hands,” said another friend, “because it would give Mueller the moral high ground.”
Instead, as is now becoming plain, the Trump strategy is to discredit the investigation and the FBI without officially removing the leadership. Trump is even talking to friends about the possibility of asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions to consider prosecuting Mueller and his team. (source: NBC)
“Here’s how it would work: ‘We’re sorry, Mr. Mueller, you won’t be able to run the federal grand jury today because he has to go testify to another federal grand jury,'” said one Trump adviser.
There’s no way Trump has the political power to pull this off. He can’t fire Mueller or bring charges against him. Not to mention, Trump also has a long history of walking away from things once he receives an ounce of pushback and we know Mueller wouldn’t go down without a fight. The backlash from the media sharing this insanity would most likely be enough to deter him.
The mere fact that Trump would even consider this approach shows just how unstable and terrified he truly is about Mueller’s investigation. Trump is in total panic mode, which doesn’t make sense from someone who claims there’s nothing to hide.
