Lots of Republican lawmakers are quietly and slowly backing away from support of and association with popular vote loser Donald Trump, as Trump’s legal problems seem to get bigger and more impeachable by the day. Not that they’ve suddenly grown spines in the matter, but they don’t want to be brought crashing down with him.
One lawmaker in particular that has been backed into quite the no-win situation by his party is none other than Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R. KY).
Just days ago, four Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee decided to vote in favor of a bill to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Among those voting for the protections were Chuck Grassley and Lindsey Graham, who have had rocky alignment with the president and his agenda over the last year, to say the least, but now their votes made it official that they want Mueller to be protected so he can finish his job.
What’s that have to do with Mitch McConnell?
Mitch McConnell has publicly said that will not allow the bill to make it to a full Senate vote, but these top Senate Republicans voted to advance the bill anyway. This basically puts Mitch McConnell all alone in his effort of blocking the protection of Robert Mueller’s investigation. If/when McConnell does in fact refuse to allow the bill to a full vote, he will be guilty in the Trump-Russia scandal in the court of public opinion.

2) Trump then gave McConnell’s wife a job, who is caught up in a financial scandal. (source)
3) McConnell took $2.5 million from Super PAC funded by a Kremlin oligarch in year that he wasn’t even running for office. (source)
4) Now McConnell wants to block the protection of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
