Every time we start to forget about the fact that one of the foundations of our American democracy, our elections, was hacked by a hostile foreign government, new information comes out that proves it was worse than we thought.
For example, this bombshell report just released that says a U.S. official in charge of protecting elections from hacking told NBC News that Russians successfully penetrated voter registration rolls of several states prior to 2016 election.
In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Jeanette Manfra, the head of cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security, said she couldn’t talk about classified information publicly, but in 2016, “We saw a targeting of 21 states and an exceptionally small number of them were actually successfully penetrated.”
“We were able to determine that the scanning and probing of voter registration databases was coming from the Russian government.”
There is no evidence that any of the registration rolls were altered in any fashion, according to U.S. officials.
Seth Abramson took to Twitter to explain why this is such big news:
2/ One reason this is such big news is that it shows that the story of Russian interference is changing and expanding over time. States that said their infrastructure wasn’t violated were—we now know—hit. Who’s to say we won’t eventually discover registration rolls WERE altered?
3/ Every time we get a new story on the scope of Russian election interference, it features two things: (1) a revelation that things were worse than we thought they were, and (2) an assurance that they weren’t worse than the current story now says. Then the next story arrives.
4/ The idea that the Russians were digitally thumbing through a number of states’ registration rolls just on a *lark*, with no intention of altering *any* data (heaven forbid it!) doesn’t pass the smell test, and I suspect will eventually be revealed as not at all what happened.
Abramson is right: the more we find out about how deep this operation went, the more we know that our election results shouldn’t have been trusted. Don’t be surprised if it’s revealed that Trump’s election was fraudulent.
