Trump has been trying his best to convince everyone of his innocence in Russia scandal since the moment the press started reporting it. In fact, he’s been denying the entire thing ever happened, until now.
Now that the evidence is too much to ignore and the grand jury has handed down indictments, he’s changing his story once again. This time, he’s admitting that Russian meddling happened and is blaming it on President Obama.
Earlier this week he tweeted “Obama was President up to, and beyond, the 2016 Election. So why didn’t he do something about Russian meddling?”
Trump literally just admitted it did happen. Let’s not forget that President Obama did try to warn America about it, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell threatened to accuse Obama of partisan politics if he exposed the Russia scandal before the election. Regardless, read that tweet again…Trump just confessed it happened.
Trump knows he really steeped in it this times, because he immediately said: “I never said Russia did not meddle in the election, I said “it may be Russia, or China or another country or group, or it may be a 400 pound genius sitting in bed and playing with his computer.” The Russian “hoax” was that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia – it never did!”
In a May 2017 interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, Trump said “this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story.” Trump continued in that interview to say, “It’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should’ve won.”
That statement earned him PolitiFact’s 2017 Lie of the Year.
In September 2017, when reports of Russian-backed Facebook ads came out, Trump tweeted, “The Russia hoax continues, now it’s ads on Facebook. What about the totally biased and dishonest Media coverage in favor of Crooked Hillary?”
In a December 2016 interview with Time, Trump said two things: He didn’t think Russia meddled, and that it might have.
“I don’t believe they interfered,” Trump said. “That became a laughing point, not a talking point, a laughing point. Any time I do something, they say ‘oh, Russia interfered.’”
But a moment later he said, “I believe that it could have been Russia and it could have been any one of many other people. Sources or even individuals.”
Trump is so eager to blame Obama for everything that’s going wrong that he didn’t take the time to think it through. The Russian interference in the election was no surprise to us, but Trump did just finally confirm it despite his months of saying this was a witch hunt…then totally denying that he ever said meddling didn’t happen. It’s already been proven that several people on Trump’s team met with the Russians, so Trump knows this is going to come back to bite him.
It’s obvious that Trump is now going to attempt to blame Obama every step of the way. While some of his supporters might fall for this, Trump’s only going to be able to ride this particular wave a short while longer.
