Trump is facing obstacles in every direction it seems. Several of his buddies have already cut deals and testified, a few others have been arrested, and his inner circle continues to be targeted by the Feds. Needless to say, things aren’t going so well for those around Trump.
Things were taken up notch this week with the news of Paul Manafort potentially obstructing justice in Robert Mueller’s probe by reaching out to witnesses, and Trump certainly noticed. It didn’t take him long to have a Twitter meltdown about it in an effort to distance himself from Manafort.
Trump tweeted: “As only one of two people left who could become President, why wouldn’t the FBI or Department of “Justice” have told me that they were secretly investigating Paul Manafort (on charges that were 10 years old and had been previously dropped) during my campaign? Should have told me! Paul Manafort came into the campaign very late and was with us for a short period of time (he represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole & many others over the years), but we should have been told that Comey and the boys were doing a number on him, and he wouldn’t have been hired!”
OK, first of all, the FBI can’t discuss ongoing, open investigations with a Presidential candidate. Second of all, when have you ever taken their warnings and intel about anything seriously anyway, Trump? You were literally warned that the Russians may infiltrate your campaign, yet you did nothing about it.
And, third of all, and perhaps most important to this particular set of blatant Presidential lies, you’ve known, worked with and been close to Paul Manafort for decades, and you absolutely would’ve hired him, without question, regardless of FBI/DOJ information.
Scott Dworkin with the Democratic Coalition points out the following:
Slate published this incredibly detailed timeline proving the Trump/Manafort relationship goes back to the 1980s, so Trump can’t deny knowing the guy.
Trump Twitter meltdown isn’t doing much other than telling us that he’s worried about a man most media outlets seem to have forgotten.
Perhaps Trump is nervous because a few weeks back Paul Manafort’s former son-in-law cut a plea deal. Then this week, Manafort’s friends set up a legal defense fund for him, which means he’s likely run out of his own money. These activities suggest that Manafort is on his last leg. No wonder Trump is freaking out.
