John Kelly, chief of staff for popular vote loser Donald Trump, is slowly seeing his cover up for a staffer’s domestic abuse unravel before his very eyes.
Kelly claimed that he responded to being told of Rob Porter’s criminal abuse of his wife quickly and thoroughly, but as is the case so often in the Trump administration, those pesky facts are getting in the way of their false narrative.
An Axios report says: Kelly’s White House enemies are ready to use FBI Director Chris Wray’s testimony as a weapon: “Wray’s FBI timeline makes one thing clear: the Kelly coverup is unraveling right before our eyes,” a White House official says.
John Kelly and the White House say he knew nothing about the domestic violence until the story broke in the Daily Mail story. Their story also claims that Rob Porter misled Kelly to get the positive statement. Porter denies these claims and says he gave Kelly an accurate picture of what would was going to be printed in the story, and totally denied the physical abuse accusations.
Kelly’s story — that he acted immediately and decisively “within 40 minutes” to terminate Porter last Tuesday night — is also undermined by what multiple White House officials told reporters in real time. They said on Wednesday that nobody asked Porter to resign and in fact several senior officials asked him to “stay and fight.”
Why this matters: Kelly had overseen relative calm among White House staff since his appointment. The bungled response to allegations of abuse by Porter has thrown that into disarray.
The White House claimed that the background check process on Porter was still ongoing, but Wray’s statement contradicts that, proving that Kelly and the White House are lying.
This administration is now so deep in their own false narratives and lies that they are having trouble keeping their stories straight.
