Even though the Trump campaign claims it is opposed to all violence, Trump’s supporters are clearly taking their cues from somewhere, and that somewhere is from the top – Trump himself.
Trump is encouraging supporters to become “election observers,” really just a nice term for “voter intimidation experts,” or in German, “The Gestapo.”
Trump’s faithfuls are acting on the fear of a rigged election, that absolutely and without question comes from Trump himself, who has been touting this as a democrat rigged election since his campaign began.
Here are the terrifying words of someone who represents Trump supporters:
“Trump said to watch your precincts. I’m going to go, for sure,” said Steve Webb, a 61-year-old carpenter from Fairfield, Ohio. “I’ll look for . . . well, it’s called racial profiling. Mexicans. Syrians. People who can’t speak American,” he said. “I’m going to go right up behind them. I’ll do everything legally. I want to see if they are accountable. I’m not going to do anything illegal. I’m going to make them a little bit nervous.”
“His supporters here said they plan to go to their local precincts to look for illegal immigrants who may attempt to vote. They are worried that Democrats will load up buses of minorities and take them to vote several times in different areas of the city. They’ve heard rumors that boxes of Clinton votes are already waiting somewhere.”
Well, Mr. Webb, that is voter intimidation, and it’s absolutely illegal. And I wonder where they heard those rumors? Perhaps in the Trump campaign boardroom where those rumors were started?
In an even more terrifying comment, the Boston Globe reported how Trump supporters intend to behave after he loses the election:
“If she’s in office, I hope we can start a coup. She should be in prison or shot. That’s how I feel about it,” Dan Bowman, a 50-year-old contractor, said of Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee. “We’re going to have a revolution and take them out of office if that’s what it takes. There’s going to be a lot of bloodshed. But that’s what it’s going to take. . . . I would do whatever I can for my country.”
These Trumpsters can shut up about how much they love their country and the constitution if they’re going to threaten American democracy in this way. You don’t get to complain about how far we’ve gone from democracy, and then riot and talk about assassinations when the vote doesn’t go your way. That’s not how this works.
