Just last week, several members of the Donald Trump administration tendered their resignations for one reason or another. For one in particular, Rob Porter, it was due to a past filled with spousal domestic abuse accusations paired with the fact he could not obtain proper security clearance because of said past.
And to make matters worse, Trump and his White House knew of this all along yet still tried to keep Porter on the job simply because they feared the repercussions the security clearance scandal could have if it were to become public knowledge.
Well — spoiler alert — it became public knowledge, and the repercussions are playing out just as expected, as yet another resignation has been handed in.
According to a Politico report, George David Banks, a senior official at the White House National Economic Council is now the third person to resign from the Trump administration. And — stop me if you’ve heard this before — something in his background prevented him from getting permanent security clearance:
“George David Banks, who had served since February 2017 as special assistant to the president for international energy and environmental policy, told POLITICO that he was informed by the White House counsel’s office Tuesday that his application for a permanent clearance would not be granted over his past marijuana use.
Like an estimated three dozen others in the White House, Banks had been working on an interim security clearance while the administration determined the status of his full clearance.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.”
At the going rate, who knows who’s next?
Now, while we take the wait-and-see approach in regards to who’s next, perhaps it is as good a time as any to remind everyone that the publicity of these security clearance problems is the last thing Trump and his White House want, because Trump’s own daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner have had difficulties obtaining their permanent security clearance as well.
Kushner had multiple suspicious meetings with the Russians, and lied about them on his clearance forms. Ivanka also failed to list her husband’s meetings on her security clearance forms.
Considering the fact that prominent members of Congress are already calling for Jared Kushner’s resignation, his name is the one I’ll be watching for.
